Kids love gelatin: the sugary bright colored jigglyness is fun to eat. Natalie Bouey is a mom who wanted to give her kids their favorite treat but to make it more healthy. She’s about to launch her company Rainbow Snacks, a big brand alternative that’s made with only natural colors and flavors and 25% less sugar with vitamin C, and fiber too. And what a fun job for me –an excuse to play.

I’m always excited to do something creative that I haven’t done yet like making vegetable wallpaper! Little Spoon Organic Baby Food wanted me to make some of their flavors into a graphic banners. Yes! I like it and I like their products–they use high pressure instead of heat to preserve their product. It looks and tastes way better than anything you find in a jar and then they go a step further by making some tasty flavor combos. I think the moms are eating it….

I like to help launch small businesses and  Tia Maka’s Tamales was a fun project. Sandra Jimenez has always made tamales for friends and wanted to start a new business. I helped her with photography by emphasizing the homemade quality of her food, the ingredients, the sauces and the deliciousness. I’d like one now, please.

SierraCover_20150212_0034Sierra Magazine featured four urban farmers from my book Backyard Roots for their annual Food issue! Above, Jonathan Chen,  became the director of the Danny Woo Community Garden in Seattle after surviving cancer as a college student. He worked with immigrants in the terraced downtown garden and introduced a kids program and chickens. Other urban farmers included Alex Winstead, an organic mushroom farmer who began his career as a hobby growing mushrooms in his basement, Rachel Hoff and Tom Ferguson who lived for a year without setting foot in a grocery store and Lee Kindell who introduced kids to aquaponics at his downtown hostel. I love to photo cocktails (and drink them) and I’ve been lately I’ve been doing both for Oakland Magazine’s cocktail column. In every issue the writer finds a delicious drink and gets the recipe from the bartender. I also photo cocktails for Oakland Magazine restaurant reviews too. Between the two, I thought I’d share some favorites…

Of all the cocktails photographed here my favorite was the Pimm’s Cup. It’s made from Pimm’s No. 1, a spirit from Great Britain. You can get a recipe from  www.foodandwine.com, but it’s so dangerously easy  why even bother. Just mix Pimm’s with ginger ale or lemon-lime soda one to one. Add fruit— apples, oranges, cucumber, mint and ice and you’ve got a great way to end the day. Or, for the best version, stop by East End Restaurant and Bar in Alameda.
